Blog 3

Up to this point, I have really enjoyed this class. It is not what I expected it to be, and I defiantly enjoy the conversations we have as a group. I really enjoy our classroom dynamic, in that we are able to discuss controversial topics with an open mind and everyone seems comfortable speaking to one another. I think this class gives us an opportunity to learn about language, rhetoric, and composition in a variety of different ways that other traditional English classes don’t allow. So far, I thin kthe most interesting thing we have discussed is the Cannibalism issue and the idea that all humans are born with the “selfish” gene.

The issue of persuasion in our everyday conversations is also really interesting. Its something we do everyday, but yet never really realize that we are doing it. I think its very interesting that after our persuasion lecture, I have begun to catch myself thinking about it in my everyday conversations. I feel like this class has been, and is going to be, very helpful in my future and potentially in my future classroom. Our discussions have begun to make me think of things in a different way and to look outside the box.

I feel like it is really important for everyone to have a clear concept and understanding of rhetoric. If this is achieved, I think that it could change the composition classroom in a positive way.

Language

I think language has a profound impact on all human life, without it, we have nothing. I think of lanuguage as something that can be written, spoken, acted out, or signed. For me, its almost impossible to think about my life without language in it. Discussing the story of Joseph and reading a few other stories about the children raised by animals really puts many questions in my mind. Im really interested to know how a child's developing brain learns language, and at what rate; and also, if not learned as a child, if an adult brain (who has never learned language) can learn it, how fast, how accurate, how in depth? Is this why it is harder for adults to learn a second language, like Spanish, in a college class- rather than b eing taught as a young child?

Because language holds a broad range of ideas, it makes me think how thankful I am to be able to hear, speak and read language. It's weird to think that people who are born deaf or blind dont get the same opportunity to know and experience all thes types of communication. I definatly think that technology is advancing at a great pace, and hopefully more discoveries will be made on the development and learning of language for all people.

Cannibalism

First off, I thought today's class discussion on Cannibalism was very interesting. It made me think about this topic in several different ways. I do beleive that language plays a very important role. The idea that chimpanzee's are cannibals is something I was unaware of. I think our human biology is very unique, although we are all made up of the same things, I do think that each of us are different. The way we are raised, our religion, and our overall knowledge of right and wrong, I beleive, heavily weighs our actions. I personally could never see myself resorting to cannibalism, however, I think the instances of human cannbialism which we have heard of are very interesting. I would like to know if there have been any studies on male and female differences in human cannibalism....
