I thought our classroom discussion in MOO was ridiculous! I, personally, feel like a permanent classroom done in this way would be completely unproductive. It seems like its to hard to stay on topic, get a feel for what everyone is trying to say, and stay on track. I have no idea what we talked about in MOO and it really just gave me a headache. Maybe if the website was set up differently, with different fonts or colors, it would help the follow-along process more, but i doubt that would even help that much.
As far as TOPIC is concerned, i have never personally experienced it. I don't think I would like it if I did though. I am the type of person that wants to know why im getting a specific grade and ways to improve myself. I feel like TOPIC might make a student feel like they are unimportant and that all their hardwork is just "graded" for the sake of grading, and not really taken seriously.

I think your suggestion on the moo is a good idea. Smaller groups and different fonts would be two major changes I think would help make the program a bigger success in classrooms today. From experience I can tell you that the topic system did make me feel that I was writing for the grade, not for the act of learning and becoming a better writer.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, the MOO was very annoying and gave me a headache. I think everyone took advantage of the new medium for learning and goofed off- who knows though, maybe if it was a regular thing people would take it more seriously.
ReplyDeleteI didn't have TOPIC either, and I am relieved. It sounds like there is no one taking the amount of time to really give constructive criticism on something that you worked really hard on...I would be annoyed. It seems like the professors are taking the easy road to get through English 1301 and 1302.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I didn't have topic either because I would have gone crazy. I don't see why the administration workers do something about it. I feet like the students are being ignored and not having a say so in topic. It seemed to me like TOPIC jsut benfited the professors rather than the students. I dont really know, but thats what it sounded like.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the MOO kind of reminded me of what Yahoo chats were like in the 90's. Not a lot of productivity going on. Although I do think that if we were ACTUALLY being graded on our interactions online and genuine participation, we would be more inclined to take turns and be more...organized
